37 All About Duck As we have established, Duck has become public enemy number one among the sea grannies (And even the gen x mamas, K, other Sarah, dog-mama Amira and in particular Riri) I haven't ever spent this much time in the village and I never see her in Cairo I don't go to the club or opera house or wherever it is the grannies gather I only surface in the summer and this suits me very well Especially after the horny, bi granny texts--that's another (extremely awkward) story So my limited impression of Duck was that she was always around tante Z and stayed in the water as long as we did I liked her so I tried to remain neutral I even tried to give her the benefit of the doubt when she asked me odd questions But it became very obvious she was trying to get Z's altered daily itinerary out of me Thankfully, I never have any idea what Z is up to Duck took this as subterfuge and slowly became more aggressive One evening she grabbed my arm like Uncle Leo from Seinfeld (I miss Seinfeld) And peered very intensely into my eyes "Your face is red, were you at the beach in the morning? The pool? With tante? Which one?" It felt very "Single White Female" the Mediterranean granny version Z confirmed that Duck had been stalking her, that she tried to tell her directly in Cairo that she wanted space and Duck went so far as to look up her cousins to get to her I don't even know Z and baba's cousins "And she's been watching us" She's been what now? "From her balcony" Why didn't you say so? "I wanted you to make up your own mind" After she murders me?! "Hahaha you're so funny Sarah" ... (If anything happens to me, interrogate Duck) Now I understand why Z was panicked, why Riri in particular despises Duck-- as Z's daughter, no doubt she was targeted And apparently, she was rude to all the other sea grannies in an attempt to isolate Z Duck got daaaark I want to walk around the village or maybe even rent a bicycle but I don't want to see anybody Bicycle seems safer |
